This castle ruin is set on the 480 metres high Berkovsky hill. It is located close the village Vrchovina and the town Doksy. This ruin belongs essentially to this landscape. The castle was established probably in 15th century by order of Jindrich Hlavac from Duba. The Vartemberks ranks among others castle possessors. Lately the Berk family got the castle back but thanks to them the castle became declined. The castle had not a suitable position as a residency so they built another castle, the Novy Berstejn (New Berstejn) close. Since the time Stary Berstejn has been desolate.
